In The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Covey draws a line between two kinds of delegation.

Gofer delegation: go for this. Do it exactly this way. Report back constantly. The delegator stays the bottleneck — they've delegated the hands, not the job.

Stewardship delegation: agree on five things up front — desired results, guidelines, resources, accountability, consequences — then get out of the way. The delegator manages outcomes, not motions.

Covey's point was that gofer delegation doesn't scale and stewardship delegation does. Every serious manager learns this eventually, usually the hard way.

Now look at how most professionals use AI.

The prompt is a gofer instruction

A prompt — even an elaborate, technique-laden, "act as a world-class analyst" prompt — is gofer delegation. Do this specific thing, this specific way, right now, while I watch. The human stays the bottleneck. One task at a time. Output inspected by vibes. The prompt-engineering industry taught a generation this and called it a skill.

It is a skill. It's just the wrong one — the one that doesn't scale.

The brief is a stewardship agreement
